Unregulated madrassas still teaching extremism in Pak: State Department

Washington, Sept 15 (ANI): The US State Department has expressed concern over the growing number of unregulated madrassas in Pakistan, saying it is teaching extremism despite the government's efforts to regulate them.

"A March 2007 report indicated that unregulated, extremist madrassas in Karachi continued to thrive in the sprawling city with a large population of young, unemployed men," the department said in the Pakistan chapter of its annual report on religious freedom.

Quoting a report by the International Crisis Group, it said that after trying hard for five years to reform madrassas, the government's programme had not fully succeeded, as extremist groups were operating mosques and madrassas in the open in Karachi and elsewhere.

Acknowledging that madrassas were traditional institutions for Muslims seeking a purely religious education, the department, however, said that in recent years "many madrassas have taught extremist doctrine in support of terrorism."

It further noted that in an attempt to curb the spread of extremism, the 2002 Madrassa Registration Ordinance required all madrassas to register with one of the five independent boards (wafaqs), cease accepting foreign financing, and accept foreign students only with the consent of their government, the Dawn reported.

Quoting statistic provided by the Religious Affairs Ministry, it said that approximately 11,000 out of an estimated 13,000 to 15,000 madrassas had registered by the end of the reporting period.

The report went on to say that 95 per cent of foreign madrassa students departed by the July 2005 deadline imposed by President Pervez Musharraf.

Pointing at the framework laid by Musharraf in December 2005 for cooperative registration of madrassas with the government, including a prohibition on the teaching of sectarian or religious hatred and violence, the department said the government and the independent madrassa boards had agreed to a phased introduction of secular subjects, including math, English, and science at all madrassas.

All wafaqs mandated the elimination of teaching that promoted religious or sectarian intolerance and terrorist or extremist recruitment at madrassas, the report said, adding that some unregistered madrassas in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and northern Balochistan continued to teach extremism. Forensic teams head to Thai tsunami isle again

PHUKET, Thailand (Reuters) - Three years after Phuket saw the largest forensic operation in history, Thai and foreign experts were working together again to identify the charred bodies from Sunday's plane crash.

Seven experts from Israel, which sent a team to the resort island in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, were due to arrive on Phuket on Tuesday.

Australia, which also took part in the tsunami effort, offered on Monday to help identify victims from the budget airliner that crashed while trying to land in driving rain and gusting wind, killing 89 people, 55 of them foreigners.

"We welcome any offer from foreign friends," Foreign Ministry spokesman Piriya Khempon told Reuters.

So far, the dead are known to include four Swedes, three Americans, two Iranians, a French national, an Indonesian, at least one Australian and a Briton.

An Israeli rabbi, telling Reuters at a temporary morgue at Phuket airport where the identities of 32 Thais and 21 foreigners have been confirmed so far, said eight Israelis were missing and two others were treated in hospital.

Nehemya Wilhelm, who flew from Israel with relatives of missing passengers and three search and rescue workers, said two of the eight were believed to be dead, judging from pictures taken by Thai police and posted on a notice board at the morgue.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said identifying all the bodies "could take some time," but Thai officials said their job could be finished soon.

"EASIER THAN TSUNAMI WORK"

"This is much easier than our work during the tsunami," Police Lieutenant General Tani Twidsi said.

"Most of the bodies are still in good condition. Many of the tourists had travel documents with them. It's not difficult to identify them," he said.

Autopsies on the 89 bodies were completed earlier on Monday and investigators were collecting fingerprints, blood samples and X-raying teeth.

"I would like to urge the families of the dead to bring as much evidence as possible to help identify the victims, especially dental records. We don't need DNA yet because the bodies are still in good condition," Tani said.

The challenge was far greater three years ago when police investigators from Thailand and at least 20 different countries had to deal with rotting bodies exposed to days in salt water and tropical heat.

Reliable fingerprints were hard to obtain from bodies lying in water. Bacteria thrived in the heat and humidity, breaking down DNA and making laboratory analysis more difficult.

Tani said a key lesson learned from the tsunami was adequate cold storage to prevent further decomposition.

In the wake of Sunday's crash, three refrigerated containers were sent to Phuket airport and others will be moved there over the next few days.

Unclaimed bodies will be buried at a cemetery in the neighboring southern province of Phang Nga, where more than 400 unidentified bodies of tsunami victims were buried last year.

Bupropion doesn't prevent smoking in ADHD patients

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The high risk of smoking among young people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not reduced by treatment with the antidepressant bupropion, according to a report in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. However, stimulants do seem to cut the likelihood of smoking.

Bupropion is sold under the trade name Zyban when it's prescribed to help people stop smoking, and under the name Wellbutrin when it's prescribed to treat depression or seasonal affective disorder.

"Given that children with ADHD are at very high risk for the development of nicotine dependence, the development of successful smoking prevention programs in this population will address a serious public health issue," Dr. Michael C. Monuteaux told Reuters Health.

Monuteaux from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, and associates evaluated the effects of bupropion on smoking prevention in a study of 57 ADHD patients of both sexes ages 9 to 18 years. They were randomly assigned to daily bupropion or placebo and were followed for an average of 1 year.

The rate of any positive test results for cotinine, a chemical marker that appears in the urine after smoking, was lower in the placebo group (28 percent) than in the bupropion group (46 percent), the investigators report.

Patients treated with bupropion were 2.3 times more likely than placebo-treated patients to start smoking over the course of follow-up. However, these differences were not statistically significant.

"We were somewhat surprised given the evidence for (bupropion's) efficacy in smoking cessation trials in adults," Monuteaux said. However, these previous studies contained adult smokers, not adolescents with ADHD. However, adolescents who received "treatment with stimulants serendipitously appeared to have a lesser risk for smoking."

Specifically, patients who were treated concurrently with stimulants were 73.6-percent less likely to start smoking over the course of follow-up compared with those who were not treated with stimulants, the report indicates. Patients treated with stimulants were also 69.5 percent less likely to continue smoking over the course of the follow-up period.

Based on these findings, "our research group is currently conducting a clinical trial examining the potential prophylactic effects of a long-acting stimulant treatment in adolescents with ADHD to test its efficacy as an agent against smoking initiation," Monuteaux said.

Tadalafil may improve erectile dysfunction in men with spinal cord injuries

Washington, Sept 11 (ANI): A new study has revealed that the drug tadalafil can improve erectile dysfunction in men suffering from spinal cord injuries.

Between 10.4 and 83 individuals per million worldwide experience spinal cord injuries every year, according to the study.

Only 25 percent of men with spinal cord injuries are able to have erections that are adequate for having intercourse.

"Throughout the world, spinal cord injury occurs most often in young men, resulting in negative physical, social and psychological consequences," the authors write.

"Erectile dysfunction, defined as the inability to attain and maintain penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance, is a common complication in men with spinal cord injury," they added.

Francois Giuliano, M.D., Ph.D., of the Raymond Poincare Hospital, Garches, France, and colleagues, conducted a randomized, double-blind study of tadalafil in 197 men with spinal cord injuries (average age 38). After a four-week period during which none of the men received treatment, 142 were randomly assigned to the tadalafil treatment group and 44 to the placebo group.

During the 12-week treatment phase, the participants were instructed to take the medication as needed before the potential for sexual activity, with a maximum of one dose daily. Those assigned to take tadalafil were given a 10-milligram dose at first and were evaluated every four weeks, at which time patients were switched to a 20-milligram dose based on their response to the treatment.

At the beginning of the study, the men's average score on the International Index of Erectile Function-a 15-item questionnaire on which a score of 25 or lower indicates erectile dysfunction-was 13.4. After 12 weeks of treatment, men taking tadalafil had an average score of 22.6 (indicating mild erectile dysfunction) and men taking placebo had an average score of 13.6 (indicating moderate erectile dysfunction). Men taking tadalafil were, on average, successful 75.4 percent of the times they attempted penetration and 47.6 percent of the times they attempted intercourse, compared with a 41.1 success rate for penetration and 16.8 percent for intercourse among men taking placebo.

"Tadalafil was safe and well tolerated with few treatment-emergent side effects," the authors wrote.

Fifty (35 percent) of patients in the tadalafil group and 15 (34 percent) of those in the placebo group experienced at least one adverse effect. Among those taking tadalafil, the most common side effects were headache (8.5 percent of patients) and urinary tract infection (7.7 percent of patients).

"As in other erectile dysfunction studies that include patients who were difficult to treat owing to pre-existing conditions (e.g., prostatectomy, diabetes mellitus), tadalafil was efficacious for the treatment of erectile dysfunction after a traumatic spinal cord injury," the authors wrote.

"On-demand treatment with tadalafil (10 milligrams or 20 milligrams) may help improve the sex lives of patients with erectile dysfunction and spinal cord injury and their partners," the authors added.

The study will appear in the November 2007 print issue of Archives of Neurology (ANI)

Therapists to get separate listing

Massage therapists fed up with being linked to the sex industry in the Yellow Pages have scored a victory with the directory company agreeing to look at separating the two industries.

Massage therapists called for the separation earlier this month.

Massage New Zealand president Barry Vautier said the heading in the directory should be changed to something like adult services, as every state in Australia had already done.

"This is important to us as some therapists still get sex calls because of the `misnaming' in the Yellow Pages," he said.

Anyone could call themselves a massage therapist, and "cowboys" who operated under the guise of providing sexual services, or who operated unprofessionally, gave massage a bad name.

Currently therapists are listed under massage health and fitness, which is followed by massage parlours.

"It has always caused a problem," Mr Vautier told the Dominion Post.

"Quite a few of our members get calls that are unsavoury, particularly those who work from home.

"Some have got to the point where they won't take male clients any more."

Yellow Pages staff met Mr Vautier this month, and the directory's marketing director, Blair Glubb, said the company would talk to both parties.

"We're open to doing something with the classification.

"We want to find a solution that works for everybody."

Mr Vautier said the move to separate the industries became more pressing after prostitution was decriminalised in 2003.

"Separating the two would make a big difference," he said.

"It will send a message to the public we're a bona fide industry."

New Study Shows Standard Therapy For Gum Disease is Significantly More Effective When Combined With Local Antibiotics

WARMINSTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new study published today in the Journal of Periodontology shows that a combination of the locally delivered antibiotic ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1mg, plus the standard treatment procedure for gum disease is significantly more effective than standard treatment alone in reducing the amount of surrounding tissue and bone that has been destroyed. The combination of ARESTIN® plus standard treatment effectively controls periodontal infection and creates a better environment where healing can occur.

The study measured the antibacterial effectiveness of using ARESTIN® to treat the specific bacteria, also known as red complex bacteria, which have been shown to cause gum disease (periodontal disease). The study results show that when administered in conjunction with the standard treatment procedure, called scaling and root planning (SRP), ARESTIN® significantly reduced the proportion of these disease-causing bacteria by 29 percent more than SRP alone. Thirty days after treatment, patients treated with SRP alone had 43 percent more periodontal disease-causing bacteria than patients receiving treatment with ARESTIN®. Additionally, patients who received the locally delivered antibiotic maintained a level of bacteria comparable to that seen in healthy patients.

The study also found that ARESTIN® plus conventional therapy significantly decreased gum bleeding, which is a sign of reduced inflammation and a measurement of the health of the gums. The control of this inflammation helps create an environment that makes it harder for the periodontal pathogens to thrive and grow. When a combination of SRP and locally-delivered antibiotic treatment is used, bleeding gums are reduced by 79 percent, compared to conventional therapy alone.

"Our findings can have a significant impact on the way periodontal disease is treated," concluded Dr. J. Max Goodson, lead investigator for the study and senior member of the Department of Periodontology at the Forsyth Institute. "In addition, ARESTIN significantly reduced the tissue damage caused by periodontal disease to a greater extent than treatment by SRP alone. Based on risk/benefit analysis use of ARESTIN would be preferred because there is little or no added risk, and it provides a clear benefit."

Study authors were also excited to find that the anti-bacterial effect of locally-delivered ARESTIN® was highly specific and caused little impact on oral bacteria that are commonly found in healthy mouths. Treatment was directed almost entirely toward restriction of the bacteria that cause periodontitis, with little inhibitory effect on species thought to be beneficial.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects more than 50 million adults across many demographic categories.(1) Advanced periodontal disease is marked by tender, swollen, and painful gums that bleed easily. After initial development of the disease, the gums may produce ulcers, which can then lead to cell death, resulting in tooth loss.(2)

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

SRP is an in-office procedure for patients with periodontal disease, during which a dental professional removes hard and soft deposits of calculus from the root surfaces of the teeth using mechanical or ultrasonic devices. This encourages healing and potential reduction in depth of the periodontal pocket, which is the space that forms at the gumline around teeth where bacteria can accumulate. This study showed that, in comparison to SRP alone, a statistically significant reduction in the numbers of infection-causing red complex bacteria is achieved when ARESTIN® is administered in addition to SRP. The ARESTIN® Microspheres are placed into the periodontal pockets, to which they adhere and deliver therapeutic drug concentrations for up to 21 days after administration.(3)

The study, titled "Minocycline HCI Microspheres reduce red-complex bacteria in periodontal disease therapy," is a phase IV-, multi-center, single-blind, randomized, parallel-group trial. Manduro Taken Out Of Arc Betting

Manduro's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hopes appear to be in tatters this evening after the brilliant colt suffered an injury in winning the Prix Foy at Longchamp.

Both Coral and Ladbrokes issued revised prices on Europe's middle-distance championship following informed speculation all was not well with him in the wake of what was an effortless trial success.

The Andre Fabre-trained five-year-old - the highest-rated horse in the world - was winning over a mile and a half for the first time in beating the top-class filly Mandesha by two and a half lengths.

Paul Harley, racing manager to owner Baron Georg Von Ullman, declined to comment, but reports from the racecourse suggested the horse was lame behind on his right leg with a suspected fracture, and that connections were waiting to see X-ray results before making any statement, which is expected tomorrow.

And Fabre told www.racingpost.co.uk: "I don't know the results of the examination yet but he was lame behind after the race and has probably suffered a small fracture.

"The vets are carrying out X-rays now. I knew there was a problem a few minutes after the race. It's a terrible blow."

Coral spokesman Simon Clare said: "Given it appears the horse picked up an injury during the race, it seems unfair to profit from such a disappointing outcome.

"We took a number of bets after the race and all of those will be refunded."

His Ladbrokes counterpart David Williams added: "Manduro has captured the imagination of punters and it's a crushing blow for his army of ante-post fans."

Authorized is now Coral's 13-8 favourite for the Arc, with Ladbrokes going 6-4 about Peter Chapple-Hyam's brilliant Epsom Derby winner.

Soldier Of Fortune, winner of the Prix Niel, is the 7-2 second-favourite with Coral, while Ladbrokes go just 5-2.

Runaway winner of the Irish Derby on very testing ground, Aidan O'Brien's runner handled vastly different conditions with some aplomb in beating Sagara by a length and a half under Johnny Murtagh, with the last three winners of the race having gone on to score in the Arc itself.

O'Brien, speaking from the Curragh, said: "The ground was totally different to what it was in the Irish Derby, but he handled it just the same.

"Obviously we'll be looking at the Arc, although we will just have to see for the moment."

Murtagh added: "He'll improve for the race as he'd been off a long time.

"Once he got going I gave him a smack with my left hand and he was off. The pacemaker did his job and got me to the two-furlong marker and my fellow did the job in the style of a high-class horse.

"He's improved from Epsom and has now won an Irish Derby and a Prix Niel. He's got a great attitude and a great heart.

"He loved the track but did get a bit tired in the last couple of hundred yards."

Part-owner Derrick Smith added: "Hopefully we'll be back here in three weeks for the Arc with him and Dylan Thomas."

Passage of Time pleased Henry Cecil on her return from a break following treatment for a throat abscess by occupying third place in the Group One Prix Vermeille.

The Musidora winner had been off the track since disappointing in the Oaks in June, where she was sent off the 9-4 favourite but dropped away to finish eighth.

Cecil blamed that below-par effort on her throat problem, and sent her to the Parisian suburbs for the start of what he hopes will be a fruitful autumn campaign.

And in the late summer sunshine Richard Hughes exuded confidence on the 4-1 shot, riding her close to the pace before asking for an effort turning for home.

The Khalid Abdullah-owned filly failed to quicken as anticipated, however, with the Francois Rohaut-trained Mrs Lindsay forging clear to initiate a double for Murtagh, holding the fast-finishing Prix de Diane winner West Wind by three-quarters of a length.

Passage Of Time was the same distance back in third, and Cecil said: "She's run very well as she's been off a long time and the ground was plenty fast enough.

"She fell to pieces when we treated her for her throat abscess and was like a skeleton.

"She'll improve from the race and she's on her way back. The Arc, the Prix de l'Opera, the Champion and the Breeders' Cup are all options and hopefully she will stay in training next year."
